TavaresTavares, Florida
Stay 1 night, or use Tavares as a half-day stop between Mount Dora and Leesburg: the seaplane base and a lakeside meal are the whole draw.
Tavares sits on a narrow isthmus between Lake Eustis and Lake Dora, about 45 minutes northwest of Orlando. It calls itself America's Seaplane City and is the Lake County seat, but the walkable core is a few blocks of Main Street plus a waterfront. Most travellers see it as a half-day add-on to Mount Dora rather than a base of its own.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: downtown is walkable but the hotels, boat ramp and restaurants are spread along US-441 and the lakeshore. No useful local bus network for visitors. Rideshare exists but waits can be long outside downtown.

Car or rideshare east along Old US-441 / FL-44
The bigger, busier neighbour: shops, cafés and a walkable hilltop centre.

Car north via FL-19
Small lakeside downtown; pair it with Tavares in one afternoon.
Door to door: About 20–25 min
Car west on US-441
More shops and services; useful for a rainy-day errand run.

Car south via FL-19 and US-27
Mostly a chain-and-suburb stop unless you are heading to the hills.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Downtown / Lake Dora waterfront
Walk to Main Street, the museum and the seaplane base; the smallest inventory and the best location.
US-441 strip (W Burleigh Blvd)
Chain hotels with parking, a few minutes' drive from downtown; you need a car for everything.
Howey-in-the-Hills
Golf resort area southwest of town, about 20 min by car; only worth it if you are playing the courses.

Watch out
Safety
- Summer heat and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms; plan outdoor time before noon.
- Lake County is car country: without a vehicle, moving between downtown, US-441 and the boat ramp is hard.
- Seaplane and boat operations are weather-dependent; check before you book.
- Some downtown restaurants and bars keep short hours early in the week.
