Fort St. John
Give Fort St. John one night as an Alaska Highway stop, not a destination: museum, a walk by the Peace River, then north to Fort Nelson or south to Dawson Creek.
Fort St. John is the largest service town on the British Columbia stretch of the Alaska Highway, 75 km north of Dawson Creek and 382 km south of Fort Nelson. It is an oil-and-gas and forestry town of about 20,000 people with a compact grid centre, one good regional museum and a handful of parks. Almost everyone here is passing through on Highway 97, so treat it as a bed, a meal and a museum rather than a place to spend a week.

The centre is a grid: 100 Street runs north–south, 100 Avenue east–west, and most of what you need is within a 15-minute walk. BC Transit runs several routes Monday to Saturday; taxis (Teco Taxi) cover the rest. A car is needed for Charlie Lake, Beatton Provincial Park and the airport.
