Essex is a small town of about 21,000 in Essex County, 31 km southeast of Windsor, and it works as a quiet, cheaper base for the county's wineries, Lake Erie shore and the Chrysler Canada Greenway rail trail. There is no train, bus or airport in town, so a car is the practical requirement. Most travellers sleep in Windsor or Kingsville and pass through Essex for a half day.

Getting around
A car is the practical way to move: sights and wineries are spread across the county and rural roads. Taxis exist in town (SX Taxi & Limousine, Essex Taxi) but are costly for winery hopping. The Chrysler Canada Greenway is a gravel rail trail for walking, cycling and cross-country skiing, running about 42 km from near Windsor to Leamington via Kingsville. Note: the LTW Transit link to Leamington and Windsor ended in April 2026 — check for a replacement before relying on it.
