StockholmStockholm, Wisconsin
Go for one afternoon on the Great River Road: bakery, pie, a 20-minute museum and the Lake Pepin bluff view. Skip as an overnight base unless you book the six-room hotel.
Stockholm is a village of about 66 people on the Wisconsin shore of Lake Pepin, the wide natural lake in the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1854 by settlers from Karlskoga, Sweden, and today it is three blocks of shops and cafés between Highway 35 and the water. Most travellers see it in two to four hours as a stop between Prescott and Pepin, or as a lunch break on the drive from the Twin Cities to La Crosse.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
You need a car. There is no bus or train to Stockholm; the village itself is walkable in 10 minutes end to end, and Highway 35 is the only through road. Park on the shoulder or in the small lots and walk.

Watch out
Safety
- Highway 35 carries fast traffic through the village: cross at the marked spots, not mid-block.
- Many businesses are seasonal or closed Monday–Wednesday: check hours the same day before you drive.
- Cell coverage is patchy along parts of the lake shore; download an offline map.
- Winter driving on WI-35 can be icy with lake-effect snow squalls: check road conditions.
