Surfside, TexasSurfside Beach

Go for 2 nights if you want a cheap Gulf beach house with your own car; skip if you have no car or want boardwalk nightlife.

Surfside is a small beach town on the Texas Gulf Coast, about 100 km south of Houston, with roughly 6.5 km of sand between the Gulf and the Intracoastal Waterway. It is a drive-in, rent-a-house destination: no promenade, no big hotels, a handful of restaurants and one gas station. Two nights covers the beach, the jetty and a fishing or surfing session; three if you add Galveston or the Bolivar Peninsula.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: services are spread over several kilometres and the nearest full grocery is over the bridge in Freeport or Lake Jackson. Bikes work for the beach strip. Speed limits and stop signs are enforced closely. The only gas station on the island is in Freeport, and the next one north is at Jamaica Beach.

Drive to Galveston, then the free ferry across Bolivar Roads

Ferry queues build on summer weekends; go early.

Museums and food, but traffic makes it a long day; better as an arrival or departure stop.

Drive north via SH-332 and I-45

Boardwalk rides and seafood; pairs with a Houston airport run.

Clute

Bluewater Highway (SH-332) corridor

RV parks, the bar-and-grill strip and the bridge to the mainland; you need a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime beach town; the real risks are Gulf water (jellyfish, rip currents), summer heat, storms and drinking tap water. Check the beach flags and water-quality signs before you swim.
  • Glass containers are banned on all beaches, village and county; alcohol in cans or plastic is allowed.
  • Driving on or over the dunes is prohibited; a village beach driving permit is about $12 a year, and the county beach north of Stanek Dr is free.
  • Camping is banned inside the village; beach camping is only allowed on the county beach north of Stanek Dr, with vehicles and tents parked on the dune side at night.
  • Tap water has had trihalomethane issues and tastes poor; buy bottled water for drinking and cooking.
  • Portuguese man-of-war and other jellyfish are common in Gulf water; check the flag and water-quality signs at beach entrances.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov; know the evacuation route signs before you unpack.
  • Seaweed can pile up in thick rafts after storms, sometimes too thick to walk through.
