PermПермь

Give Perm one full day if you are already on the Trans-Siberian; two nights if you want the Gulag museum at Perm-36, which is a 100 km (62 mi) trip.

Perm is a million-person industrial city on the Kama river, at the western edge of the Urals, and a stop on the Trans-Siberian line. It was a closed city until 1990, so its draw is Soviet-era weight rather than a polished old town: the Motovilikha gun museum, the art gallery, the opera house and the Perm-36 camp museum 100 km northeast. Most travellers pass through; those who stay need one or two nights and a tolerance for long bus rides across a city that stretches 25 km along the river.

  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Russia ↗Check your own government travel advice for Russia before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Russia ↗Direct flights from much of Europe and North America are suspended; no independent tourist route is documented here.
  • Russia ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Russia before you rely on it.

Getting around

Trams and buses are the only practical way across a city that runs 25 km along the Kama; tickets are bought from the driver or conductor and a transfer means a second ticket (fare about ₽20). Services run roughly 05:30–00:30. Allow 45–60 minutes for cross-city trips and plan around the river, not through it.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Kungur and the Ice Cave

go

Door to door: About 3–4 h each way

Train or bus east toward Yekaterinburg, then local transport to the cave

The next Trans-Siberian stop east, 50 km (31 mi) away; the ice cave is the reason to break the journey.

Khokhlovka wooden architecture museum

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h each way

Road north of the city, about 46 km (29 mi); bus or taxi

Open 10:00–18:00; check transport before going, it is thin.

Perm-36 Gulag museum

overnight

Door to door: About 2.5 h each way

Road northeast to Kuchino, about 100 km (62 mi); car or organised tour

Open 10:00–17:00; too far for a comfortable same-day return without a car.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre (Komsomolsky Prospekt / Lenina)

Walkable to the art gallery, opera house and the main hotels; best for a short stay.

Near Perm II station

Practical for an early train out; the New Star and other hotels sit within a few minutes of the platform.

Motovilikha (east bank)

Only if the weapons museum is your priority; it is a long ride from the centre.

Watch out

Safety

Perm is an ordinary Russian industrial city: the real risks are traffic, pickpockets on packed buses and the markets, and unlit parks at night. Cold from November to March is a planning problem, not a crime one.
  • Reckless driving is the main risk; cross only at marked crossings.
  • Pickpocketing on crowded public transport and in the Central and Chinese markets.
  • Avoid Balatovo Park and other city parks after dark.
  • November to March is genuinely cold; indoor heating is strong, so dress in layers.
  • Perm-36 is 100 km (62 mi) out with limited public transport: arrange the trip before you commit.

Fare anchors (2026 estimate)

  • Airport (PEE) → city by bus 42: about ₽100, roughly 40–50 min
  • Tram or bus ride: about ₽20, buy from the driver
  • Train Perm → Moscow: about 20 h, ₽1,400–5,600

Say or show

  • Здравствуйте — Hello (zdrastvuyte)
  • Спасибо — Thank you (spasiba)
  • Сколько стоит? — How much is it? (skolka stoit)
  • Где вокзал? — Where is the station? (gde vakzal)
  • Можно оплатить картой? — Can I pay by card? (mozhna aplatit kartay)
  • Помогите — Help (pamagite)

Card payments from foreign-issued cards are unreliable in Russia; carry rubles in cash and check the current situation before you go.
