Atlanta, IllinoisAtlanta

Stop for 2–3 hours on a Route 66 drive: the Paul Bunyan statue, the arcade museum and a diner breakfast. Sleep here only if you want a quiet night.

Atlanta is a town of about 1,700 people on I-55 in Logan County, halfway between Springfield and Bloomington-Normal. Route 66 runs through the middle, and the draw is a 19-foot Paul Bunyan statue holding a hot dog plus a small cluster of Route 66 shops and diners on Arch Street. There is no train station and no airport; you need a car. Two to three hours covers the sights, and most travellers use it as a break on the drive rather than a base.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: I-55 runs past town and Route 66 follows the old street grid through downtown. Downtown is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end, but pavements thin out fast once you leave Arch Street, and there is no local bus. Park on the street near the statue and walk the block.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small town; the real risks are driving (I-55 traffic, winter ice, deer at dusk) and long gaps between open businesses. Lock the car and keep to lit streets after the bars close.
  • No train stop: Amtrak passes through but the nearest stations are Lincoln and Bloomington-Normal.
  • Small-town hours: several shops and the arcade museum open only a few days a week — check before you detour.
  • Winter ice and summer heat on open farmland; fill the tank before the last stretch.
  • Not the same place as Atlanta, Georgia: check your airport code before booking.

  • It is on SW Arch Street, a block west of the main crossroads. — Where is the Paul Bunyan statue?
  • The arcade museum opens only a few days a week — check before driving over. — Is the museum open today?
  • Most places take cards; keep some cash for small shops and arcade games. — Can I pay by card?
  • On the I-55 exits; fill up before the rural stretch. — Where is the nearest petrol station?
  • No local bus; you need a car or a pre-booked ride. — Is there a taxi or bus?
  • About 45 minutes south on I-55. — How far is Springfield?

Small-town hours change with the season: call ahead for the arcade museum, library and diners.
