Maryborough is a small goldfields town of about 8,000 people, settled in 1840 and reshaped after gold was found in 1854. Its draw is the 1874 railway station, a walkable heritage centre and gold prospecting, not a long list of sights. Most travellers see it in half a day or use it as a quiet, cheaper base for the central goldfields.
