Ribe is Denmark's oldest town, a compact knot of timber-framed houses on three small islands in the Ribe Å, 30 min by train from Esbjerg. The cathedral tower, the night watchman and the Viking museum fill a day; the Wadden Sea National Park, 10 km west, is the reason to add a second. Cars are useless inside the old town, which is pedestrianised.

Getting around

Walk. The old town is pedestrianised and the cathedral is visible from almost everywhere. Bikes cover the VikingeCenter (2 km south) and Kammerslusen (5 km west); the Wadden Sea Centre (10 km) needs a car, bus or tour. Trains run hourly to Esbjerg and Tønder in daylight, less often at night.

Safety

Ribe is a small, quiet town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are the Wadden Sea tides, unlit marsh roads after dark and bicycles on the narrow streets.
  • The Wadden Sea floods: walk the seabed only with a guide, never alone.
  • Many museums and restaurants run shorter winter hours; check before you travel.
  • The night watchman walk runs 1 May–29 Oct only.
  • Tower access at the cathedral is a narrow climb and can close in bad weather.
