Victoria

Victoria is a half-day town: do the market and clock tower before 11:00, then go to the beach; sleep at Beau Vallon if you want sand at the door.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • African islands ↗Sleep on the island you fly home from the night before your long-haul departure; inter-island flights and ferries in this region are cancelled or rescheduled often enough to break a same-day connection.
  • African islands ↗In the Indian Ocean islands book flexible rates for December to March: a cyclone warning can shut airports, ferries and roads for two or three days.
  • Seychelles ↗Seychelles requires a travel authorisation for visitors; apply only on the official government portal and check the rules for your passport before you fly.
  • Seychelles ↗Check with a travel clinic whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are arriving from or through a country with yellow fever risk.
  • Seychelles ↗Do not take shells, coral or coco de mer nuts without an export permit; the Vallée de Mai and Aldabra are protected sites.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Victoria is one of the smallest capitals in the world, and its sights are a few streets apart. The trip that goes wrong is the one that expects the town to fill a day, or that leaves the ferry quay to the last minute. Four small walking areas cover the town, the botanical garden and the harbour, and Beau Vallon is the beach base a short taxi ride away.

Fits

  • Arrival and departure nights
  • Short island stopovers
  • Market and garden walkers

Does not fit

  • Nightlife seekers (the town closes early)
  • Travellers without any cash for small shops
  • Wheelchair users (steep, uneven streets)

Don't confuse
Victoria is the capital town on Mahé; the airport is 10 km away at Pointe Larue, and Beau Vallon is a separate beach area on the north-west coast.

Where’s what, as a list:

  • Victoria centre: clock tower and market: Morning cluster: market counters and the clock tower are a few minutes apart on flat streets; go before 11:00 and leave for shade by midday.
  • Botanical garden, Mont Fleuri: Garden cluster: a shaded half-morning among palms and giant tortoises; take a taxi there and back, the road is steep and has little pavement.
  • Harbour and ferry quay: Logistics cluster: the inter-island ferry terminals and the waterfront; walk it only for the ferry, not as a sight.
  • Beau Vallon beach: Beach cluster: a long, gentle beach with hotels, cafés and a Wednesday-evening bazaar in some seasons; the safest base for a first night.
  • Sleep area Beau Vallon: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
  • Sleep area Victoria centre: suits Families, price band $.
  • Seychelles International Airport (SEZ), 40–70 min by the usual route.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • A small market morning
  • Short distances
  • Beach evenings

You will hate

  • Midday heat
  • Steep narrow roads
  • High prices

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster; taxi between Victoria and Beau Vallon; the airport is a taxi ride.
Passes
No pass. Taxi fares are set by zone; agree the fare first.
Last trains
No rail; buses run less often in the evening, so plan a taxi home after dark.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Taxis on Mahé use fixed rates by zone; ask for the fare before the ride and carry small rupee notes.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
Hotels arrange car transfers; there is no luggage forwarding service.
Dead zone
Late flights: ask the hotel to hold bags and for a shower room.
