  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Transnistria ↗Read your own government's travel advice for Moldova (which covers Transnistria) before booking; several governments advise against all but essential travel to the region.
  • Transnistria ↗Enter Moldova through a Moldovan-controlled crossing first (for example Chișinău airport); at the Transnistrian checkpoint you receive a local migration document that sets how long you may stay. Keep it until you leave.
  • Transnistria ↗Most embassies cannot provide normal consular help inside Transnistria; confirm your insurance covers the region.
  • Tiraspol area ↗Read your own government's travel advice for Moldova before booking; several governments advise against all but essential travel to Transnistria.

Decide

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Tiraspol is the de facto capital of Transnistria, a breakaway region that most governments treat as part of Moldova. The town centre is compact and quiet, but consular help is very limited, foreign cards generally do not work and the road from Chișinău passes a checkpoint. Four small clusters cover a visit; sleep one night at most, and do not plan a tight flight connection after it.

Fits

  • Curious short stays with cash
  • Travellers who arrange a driver
  • History and Soviet-era architecture

Does not fit

  • Travellers who need cards and roaming
  • Anyone whose government advises against travel
  • Strollers and wheelchairs (broken pavements)

Don't confuse
Transnistria is internationally recognised as part of Moldova but run by its own de facto authorities; Tiraspol is its main town, on the Dniester's east bank.

Where’s what, as a list:

  • 25 Oktyabrya Street and the House of Soviets: Morning cluster: the main street, the square with the Lenin statue and the Kvint distillery; flat, quiet, look but do not photograph guards or government entrances.
  • Central market and Lenin Street: Late-morning cluster: the covered central market and the shops and canteens on Lenin Street; flat, cash only, small notes.
  • Memorial of Glory and Suvorov Square: Afternoon cluster: the war memorial with its eternal flame, the tank monument and Suvorov Square; flat, exposed, quiet.
  • Dniester embankment and the old fortress: Short cluster: the river edge and the old fortress area; exposed, quiet, and the area nearest the Dniester frontier: keep to the public paths.
  • Sleep area Centre (25 Oktyabrya Street): suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.

  • Chișinău International Airport (RMO), Moldova, 110–180 min by the usual route.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • A compact Soviet-era centre
  • Local brandy
  • A short, quiet stay

You will hate

  • No card payments
  • Limited consular help
  • Checkpoint uncertainty

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster; taxi between clusters (agree the fare first).
Passes
No pass. Taxis and minibuses are cheap; agree the fare or ask your hotel.
Last trains
No metro; taxis are few after dark: ask the hotel to book the ride back.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Cracked pavements and few lifts: bags go from the car to the door, never on a walk.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding culture; keep the main bag in Chișinău and take a day pack.
Dead zone
Late departures: ask the hotel to hold bags and book the car early.

Survive

Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.

Safety

  • Several governments advise against all but essential travel to Transnistria; read your own government's Moldova advice first.
  • Consular help is very limited: tell someone your plans and return time.
  • Mobile roaming often does not work: download maps and key addresses offline.
  • Avoid photographing military sites, checkpoints, police or government buildings.
  • Stay away from the Ukrainian border area.

Red lines

  • Keep political opinions to yourself; do not argue about the region's status.
  • Do not photograph guards, checkpoints or government entrances.
  • Dress modestly in Orthodox churches.

Practical

  • Toilets: cafés and hotels; public toilets are rare.
  • Tap water: use bottled water.

Scams and red flags

Walk away if you see these

  • Taxi drivers who name a price after the ride: agree the fare first or ask your hotel to book.
  • Moneychangers in the street: use a bank or an exchange counter and count the notes.
  • Unofficial 'guides' at the checkpoint offering help with paperwork: use your hotel or driver.
  • Requests for payment at the checkpoint that are not on the posted list: ask for a receipt.
