Destination OS · Reef mornings, one road, two beach villages

Roatán

Roatán is a base-on-the-west-end island: sleep in West End or West Bay, dive or snorkel in the morning, keep the middle of the day for shade, and take a taxi you booked for everything after dark — there is one main road and it is not lit.

  • Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
  • Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
  • Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
  • Honduras ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Honduras's migration authority or a Honduran consulate; the CA-4 agreement with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua can make your permitted stay count across all four.
  • Honduras ↗Transit San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa by day and with pre-arranged transport; do not use public buses between cities.
  • Honduras ↗Do not travel to Gracias a Dios (La Mosquitia) except with a specialist operator; several governments advise against all travel there.
  • Bay Islands ↗Do not touch coral or take shells; check the safety record of any dive shop.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Roatán is a long, narrow island with one main road, a small airport near Coxen Hole and two beach villages at the western end. Most trips break on transport: taxis are priced by zone and hard to find late, the road is unlit, and cruise-ship days crowd the beaches. Four small clusters cover a first visit; a hired taxi or a scooter joins them, and hurricane season decides whether the ferries and flights run.

Fits

  • Divers and snorkellers
  • Beach and reef short breaks
  • Travellers who arrange taxis

Does not fit

  • Strollers and wheelchairs (sand and broken paths)
  • Night wanderers (no lit walking route)
  • Travellers who want city sightseeing

Don't confuse
Roatán is the island; Coxen Hole is the main town near the airport and West End and West Bay are the beach villages 15–25 minutes west.

  • West End village: Reef-and-village cluster: one sandy main street with dive shops, snorkel spots off the beach and evening bars; flat and short, but sandy.
  • West Bay Beach: Beach cluster: a long white beach with resorts, day-pass bars and snorkel spots; quiet at dusk; arrive by taxi.
  • Coxen Hole town: Errand cluster: banks, ATMs, pharmacies and the harbour; not a sightseeing stop, and not for walking at night.
  • Sandy Bay & the gardens: Half-day cluster: the botanical gardens and the quieter north-shore beaches; a taxi from either village.
  • Sleep area West Bay resort strip: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.
  • Sleep area West End village: suits Families, solo on a budget, price band $$.
  • Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB), Roatán, 30–55 min by the usual route.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • Reef diving and snorkelling
  • Beach-village evenings
  • Small distances inside a village

You will hate

  • Long road transfers
  • Cruise-ship crowds
  • Insect bites at dusk

Arrive & move

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a village by day; taxi between villages and always after dark.
Passes
No pass. Taxis have zone prices: agree the price before you get in. Shared minibuses run on the main road by day.
Last trains
No rail. Taxis get scarce late: ask your hotel or dive shop to book the ride back before you go out.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Sand and broken paths: bags go from the taxi to the door, never on a walk.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels and dive shops hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding culture; keep the big bag at your hotel.
Dead zone
Late flights: ask the hotel to hold bags and for a room to shower; the airport is 25–40 minutes from the beach villages.

Survive

Safety basics, the lines not to cross, and practical habits that save the day.

Safety

  • Petty theft happens on beaches: leave valuables in the room and never leave a bag unattended on the sand.
  • Sun and heat: AC or shade stop every 60–90 minutes; drink bottled water.
  • Emergency: 911; ask your hotel for the ambulance and dive-emergency numbers.
  • Hurricane season (Jun–Nov): follow local warnings and your airline; ferries and small planes cancel first.

Red lines

  • Do not touch coral, feed fish or take shells.
  • Ask before photographing people.
  • Cover up away from the beach: beachwear is for the beach.

Practical

  • Toilets: hotels, restaurants and dive shops.
  • Tap water is not for drinking.
