Conception Bay South is a 26,000-person coastal town 20 km southwest of St. John's, strung along Route 60 in nine old fishing communities from Topsail to Seal Cove. It has no public transit and no real town centre, so a car decides everything. Come for the Topsail Beach sunset, the Manuels River trilobite trails and the Admirals' Coast drive; sleep in St. John's unless you want a motel night on the water.

Getting around

Car or taxi only: there is no public transit in CBS. Route 60 (Conception Bay Hwy) runs the length of the town; Route 2 (Pitt's Memorial Drive) links it to Mount Pearl and St. John's in about 20–30 min. Local taxis cover short hops; expect to book by phone rather than hail one.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a Canadian town: the real risks are the two-lane highway, coastal fog and cold water. Swim only where locals do; the bay stays cold even in August.
  • No public transit: without a car or taxi you are stuck on one stretch of Route 60.
  • Route 60 is a two-lane highway with driveways and pedestrians: watch for cars pulling out at the beach and trailheads.
  • Many seasonal places (ice-cream stands, some restaurants) close from October to May.
  • Coastal fog and sudden rain are normal even in July: bring a shell, not just a T-shirt.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on the coastal trails; tell someone your plan.
