Gorontalo is the provincial capital of Gorontalo province on the Gulf of Tomini, and for most travellers it is a one- or two-night staging point between Manado or Makassar and the Togean Islands. What holds you here is the year-round whale-shark site at Botubarani, a 1522 Portuguese-built hill fort, Lake Limboto, and cheap tuna satay. The city itself is a working Indonesian town with Dutch-era buildings, few foreign visitors and almost no alcohol on sale.

Getting around

Bentor (motorbike rickshaw) is the local taxi: about Rp5,000 in town, Rp20,000–30,000 to beaches and waterfalls, Rp40,000 from the harbour to the centre. Grab and GoJek work but with few cars and pickup restrictions at the mall. Light-blue bemos and local buses exist but are aimed at residents. No meter culture: agree the fare first.

Watch out

Safety

Low street-crime risk for visitors; the practical issues are unlit roads after dark, motorbike traffic, unmarked bentor fares and the single-vessel ferry. Standard travel insurance and a copy of your passport are enough.
  • Alcohol is hard to find; a convenience store near Melati Hotel is the usual workaround, and restaurants tolerate BYO up to about 2 bottles per person.
  • Whale-shark feeding at Botubarani is a managed, fed site, not a wild encounter: do not touch the animals and keep your distance.
  • The Togean ferry is a single vessel — if it is out of service there is no replacement that week.
  • Ramadan changes daytime opening hours for food stalls and restaurants.
  • Grab/GoJek cannot always pick up from Citimall; walk a block first.
