Manitowoc and Two Rivers are twin harbor towns on the Lake Michigan shore, about 45 minutes south of Green Bay and an hour north of Sheboygan. They are known for shipbuilding and commercial fishing history, a submarine tour, the tallest lighthouse on the Great Lakes, and a state forest beach. Two nights covers both towns and Point Beach; one night works if you are only breaking the drive to Door County.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the two towns are about 7 mi apart and the state forest, ferry dock and most restaurants sit outside walking distance. Downtown Manitowoc and downtown Two Rivers are each walkable once parked. The Mariner's Trail is a paved bike and walking path between the towns along the shore.

Safety

Both towns are calm by US standards and Two Rivers is the quieter of the two; the real risks are the lake (cold water, breakwater waves), winter ice and deer on rural roads at dusk.
  • The last stretch of the Manitowoc north breakwater can be underwater or closed when Lake Michigan levels are high: check before walking out.
  • S.S. Badger sailings are seasonal (roughly May–October) and vehicle space sells out in summer: book ahead.
  • Small-town kitchens close early; many places stop serving by 21:00 and some close Sunday and Monday.
  • Winter ice and lake-effect snow make shoreline paths and breakwaters unsafe.
