Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
- Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
- Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
- Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
- Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
- Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.
Haarlem is a compact Golden Age town 20 km west of Amsterdam, with a Gothic church on its market square, two strong art museums and a station 10–15 minutes on foot from the centre. Trains from Amsterdam Centraal run every 10 minutes and take about 15 minutes, so it works as a quieter base or an easy day out. Most visitors need one full day; two if you add the coast or the dunes.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
Walk: the station to the Grote Markt is 10–15 minutes, and the old centre is small enough to cover on foot. Buses 2, 73 and 300 link the station to Centrum/Verwulft in about 5 minutes. Trains run to Amsterdam Centraal every 10 minutes (about 15 min) and to Zandvoort aan Zee every 30 minutes. Cycle paths are good and the terrain is flat; a bike from Amsterdam takes about 1–1.5 hours.

Quieter, near the oldest public park in the country; 15–20 min walk from the station.

Watch out
Safety
- Bikes have priority on many streets and cycle paths: look both ways before crossing, including one-way streets.
- Some hofjes courtyards are private homes; only enter the ones with a sign or an open gate.
- Museum and church hours change by season and many close on Mondays: check the official site before you go.
- The Ten Boom Museum is small and entry is by guided tour only; tour times are posted on the door and you cannot wait inside.

Coming as the guide grows
- Airport-to-bed contract for AMS: Schiphol train change at Sloterdijk versus R-net bus 300, with a taxi fallback.
- Walking clusters with rescue anchors: Grote Markt, Frans Hals Museum and Groot Heiligland, Teylers and the Spaarne, the station quarter.
- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Sint-Bavokerk, Frans Hals Museum, Teylers Museum, Molen De Adriaan) and eat pages with last orders.
- Coast and bulb-field fixtures so Zandvoort and the spring flower routes can go green.
