- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
- Pacific Northwest ↗Prices are shown before sales tax; Oregon has no sales tax, Washington does.
- Pacific Northwest ↗Tipping is expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, US$1–2 a drink.
- Oregon ↗Self-serve gas is legal statewide since 2023; some stations still pump for you at the same price.
- Oregon ↗Speed limits are enforced strictly; fines start around $110 and double in work and safety zones.
- Oregon ↗Mountain passes can require chains or traction devices in winter; check TripCheck before crossing the Cascades.
- Oregon Coast ↗All wet sand within 16 vertical feet of the low-tide line is public land; access is free and no beach is private.
- Oregon Coast ↗The Pacific here is cold and rough year-round; sneaker waves and rip currents kill visitors most years. Watch from the sand, not the water.
- Oregon Coast ↗If you feel a strong earthquake or see the sea pull far out, go uphill immediately on a signed tsunami route; do not wait for an official warning.

The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is the largest expanse of coastal sand dunes in North America: roughly 65 km of open sand, forest and lakes along the Oregon Coast between Florence and the Coos River, managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of Siuslaw National Forest. It is a recreation area, not a national park — no gate, no per-person entry fee — and it is split between quiet hiker-only sectors (Oregon Dunes Day Use, Eel Creek, Tahkenitch) and the big motorized riding zones (Spinreel to Horsfall, parts of Umpqua), so the single most useful decision is which sector you drive to. Dunes rise to about 150 m above sea level, the sand is loose and shadeless, and the Pacific here stays cold year-round.

How much daylight do you have?
Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The Carter Dunes Trail and the Oregon Dunes Day Use area are built for visitors with limited mobility.
Visiting lightly
- Stay on signed routes and out of plover nesting closures; the open beach is nesting habitat for part of the year.
- Pack out all rubbish; there are few bins on the sand.
- If you ride an OHV, stay inside marked zones to keep the quiet sectors quiet.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area?
Nothing to enter: it is a national recreation area managed by the U.S. Forest Service, with no gate and no per-person fee. You pay only where a day-use parking fee is posted (about $5 per vehicle, 2026 estimate) or for camping (about $25–35 per night, 2026 estimate). A Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful pass covers parking fees where charged.
What are the best hikes in Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area?
For open sand without vehicles, the Oregon Dunes Day Use loop and the Eel Creek Trail are the two to pick. The Tahkenitch Dunes and Threemile Lake loop adds forest and a lake, and the Siltcoos River trail is a flat walk to the beach. All are hiker-only sectors; the Spinreel to Horsfall and Umpqua areas are dominated by OHV traffic.
When is the best time to visit Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area?
June to September for dry sand and long light, with September the best balance of warm weather and thinner crowds. July and August are busiest, especially on the OHV areas. Winter is wet and windy; spring and autumn give mild, quieter days with a higher chance of rain.
Do I need a permit or pass?
No permit to enter. A parking pass is needed where a day-use fee is posted, and camping fees apply at developed campgrounds. If you ride an OHV, Oregon requires an ATV permit for the machine; check current rules before you go.
Can I camp on the dunes?
Yes, with limits. Developed campgrounds in Siuslaw National Forest take tents and trailers, with a maximum stay of 14 days out of every 30. Dispersed camping is allowed away from roads, trails and developed sites, and in OHV areas only at designated sand-camping sites.
Is it the same as Sand Master Park or the Oregon Coast dunes near Florence?
Sand Master Park is a private sandboarding park in Florence, not part of the recreation area. The national recreation area itself runs about 65 km along the coast from Florence south to the Coos River near North Bend.
