The Oregon Coast is a 580 km strip of public beach, headlands and small towns on US Highway 101, between Astoria in the north and Brookings in the south. All wet sand is public under the 1967 Beach Bill, so the beach is the attraction and the towns are just beds and food. A car is effectively required. Pick two or three bases — Cannon Beach or Seaside, Newport or Lincoln City, Bandon or Gold Beach — and drive the gaps in daylight. Summer weekends and Willamette Valley heat waves fill every room on the 101 corridor; book ahead.
