Mansfield is a west Nottinghamshire market town of about 78,000 people with a market tradition going back roughly 700 years. It is not a destination town on its own: the draw is position. Sherwood Forest, Edwinstowe and the Major Oak are a few miles north, Hardwick Hall about six miles west, and Nottingham is 30–40 minutes by train. Come for one night, use it as a cheap bed and a car or bus base, and spend your daylight outside the town centre.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: market place, museum, Four Seasons Centre and both stations sit within about 15 minutes on foot. Buses run from Mansfield bus station to Edwinstowe, Worksop and Nottingham; East Midlands Railway's Robin Hood line links Mansfield with Worksop and Nottingham, usually hourly. For Sherwood Forest and Hardwick Hall a car is much faster; without one, plan around the bus timetable and accept longer door-to-door times.

Watch out

Safety

Mansfield is an ordinary English market town and fine by day. The centre empties in the evening, so walk lit routes, keep to the West Gate and market area at night, and treat late-night pubs with no posted prices the same way you would anywhere: ask the total first.
  • Trains on the Robin Hood line are roughly hourly and stop early in the evening: check the last service before you book a late return.
  • Mansfield station has no ticket barriers; buy before you board or at the ticket office on platform 1.
  • Sherwood Forest visitor facilities and Hardwick Hall run seasonal hours: check opening days before travelling out.
  • The town centre is quiet at night; stick to lit streets around West Gate and the market place.
