Panaca

Give Panaca one night as a base for Cathedral Gorge, not a day of its own: two sights in town, one food truck, no alcohol sold.

Panaca is a farm town of about 960 people in Lincoln County, founded as a Mormon settlement in 1864 and the oldest town in southern Nevada. It bans gambling and alcohol, so it works as a quiet bed for Cathedral Gorge State Park a mile north and as a stop on US-93 between Las Vegas and Great Basin country. The town itself is two historic buildings and a market.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

You need a car. Panaca sits at the junction of US-93 and NV-319, and the park, the market and the B&Bs are 1–3 mi apart with no transit. Fill up in Caliente or Pioche; fuel in town is limited.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are desert driving distances, summer heat and no alcohol or fuel after dark. Carry water, keep the tank above half and tell someone your route.
  • No alcohol is sold in Panaca, and gambling is banned — buy drinks in Pioche or Caliente.
  • Cell reception is patchy outside town; the campground wifi is paid and unreliable.
  • Summer afternoons top 35 °C (95 °F); hike Cathedral Gorge before 10:00 or after 17:00.
  • Food options are one truck and a market: arrive with supplies or plan to eat in Pioche, 12 mi north.
  • Fire restrictions can close campfires; check the park's current warning level before you buy wood.
