Whitby is a small North Yorkshire coastal town where the River Esk meets the North Sea, known for its ruined clifftop abbey, its whaling and Captain Cook history, and its Dracula connection. It is compact enough to walk in a day, but the surrounding moors, steam railway and coastal villages reward a second night. Summer weekends are crowded and parking in town is effectively impossible, so arrive by train or use the park and ride.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 15–20 min end to end, but the east bank is steep: the 199 Steps climb from Church Street to St Mary's Church and the abbey, or take the gentler Green Lane. Local buses run along the coast to Sandsend and Robin Hood's Bay but stay inland, so they are little use for beach hopping. Taxis are plentiful for late nights and station runs.

Watch out

Safety

Whitby is a low-crime small town and safe to walk at night; the real risks are steep wet steps, fast-changing tides on the beach, cold water and icy moor roads in winter.
  • Parking in town is impossible on summer weekends: use the Guisborough Road park and ride (Apr–Oct, from 08:00 to dusk; the bus ticket covers parking).
  • Moor roads have sharp bends and steep gradients and can close in winter; the A169 descent into Sleights is 25%.
  • Swimming off Whitby beach is cold and there is a brisk shoreline current; the beach is covered at high tide.
  • Dogs are banned on the busiest beach sections May–Sep (the middle Upgang section and Tate Hill beach stay open to them).
  • Book accommodation and the Goth Weekend dates well ahead; late April and Halloween fill the town.
