Newark-on-Trent is a redbrick market town in Nottinghamshire where Charles I was handed over in 1646, ending the first Civil War. The compact centre holds a ruined castle, the country's largest parish church and a national Civil War museum, all within a 15-minute walk. Trains from London King's Cross take about 80 minutes, so it works as a stop between London and York or Lincoln rather than a base.

Safety

Low-crime market town; the real risks are the busy A1 junction, unlit riverside paths after dark and weekend drink crowds around Kirkgate.
  • The A1/A46/A17 junction queues badly on showground event days; allow extra time by car.
  • Town Hall Museum has been closed for years: check before planning around it.
