Graignamanagh is a small Kilkenny village on the River Barrow, built around Duiske Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1204. The village and its Tinnahinch half across the river in Carlow take an afternoon to walk; the reason to sleep here is the river, the Barrow Way towpath and Brandon Hill, the county's highest point. Public transport is thin, so a car or a bike changes what you can do.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. For Brandon Hill, St Mullins, Ullard and Inistioge you need a car, a bike or a long walk: there is no local bus. The Barrow Way towpath runs 8 km from Tinnahinch to St Mullins on the Carlow bank.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe; the real risks are the narrow Main Street with no footpath in places, fast water on the Barrow, and unmarked bog and forestry tracks on Brandon Hill. Tell someone your route and carry a charged phone.
  • No onward public transport from Thomastown station: arrange a taxi or bring a bike on the train.
  • Tinnahinch Castle is unsafe and fenced: look from outside only.
  • Duiske Abbey is an active parish church and opens mainly for mass: check times before you build a day around it.
  • Rented boats may not enter tidal water below St Mullins, so you cannot reach New Ross or Waterford by hire boat.
  • Many guesthouses and restaurants close from November to March: book ahead and confirm opening.
