NewportNewport, Kentucky

Give Newport one full day and one night: the aquarium, the Levee and the riverfront walk, then cross the Purple People Bridge into Cincinnati on foot.

Newport is a small Ohio River city of about 15,000 people directly across from downtown Cincinnati, reached on foot over the Purple People Bridge. Almost everything a visitor wants — Newport on the Levee, the aquarium, Monmouth Street's bars and restaurants, the East Row historic district — sits inside a 2 km walk. It works as a one-night base for Cincinnati or as a half-day stop on a Northern Kentucky drive.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Walk. The city is compact and on a grid; street numbers rise as you go south. The Purple People Bridge is pedestrian and bicycle only and links the Levee to downtown Cincinnati. TANK buses cover Northern Kentucky and cross into Cincinnati, including the Southbank Shuttle along the riverfronts. A car helps for day trips but parking near the Levee fills on weekends.

Covington, Kentucky

Door to door: About 20–40 min

Same riverfront setup, smaller; pair it with a Cincinnati day.

Cincinnati, Ohio

go

Door to door: 10–20 min on foot

Walk over the Purple People Bridge, or the Southbank Shuttle

No car needed; the bridge drops you near the downtown riverfront.

Florence, Kentucky

caution

Door to door: About 20–25 min

Car via I-471 and I-275

Mostly shopping and the airport side; only worth it if you are heading to CVG.

Fort Thomas, Kentucky

caution

Door to door: About 10–15 min

Car via US 27 south

Residential hills and a small commercial strip; a short stop, not a day.

Williamstown, Kentucky

go

Door to door: About 45–55 min

Car via I-75 south

Ark Encounter is the draw; buy dated tickets ahead.

Maysville, Kentucky

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Car via US 52 east along the Ohio River

Long river drive; better as a night on a longer route.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Riverfront / Newport on the Levee

Hotels, aquarium, cinema and river views; the only area where you can walk to everything without a car.

Monmouth Street (East Row edge)

Bars, coffee and restaurants on the doorstep; 10–15 min walk to the Levee.

East Row Historic District

Quiet 19th-century streets for walking; few beds, mostly short-term rentals.

Downtown Cincinnati (across the bridge)

Bigger hotel choice and a 10–20 min walk over the Purple People Bridge.

Watch out

Safety

Newport is a normal small US city: daytime walking is fine, the Levee and Monmouth Street are busy at night, and the usual advice applies — stay in lit areas, keep car doors locked, and do not leave anything visible in a parked car.
  • Parking near the riverfront is limited and priced high on event nights; use the Levee garage or walk from Cincinnati.
  • Weekend evenings around the Levee and Monmouth Street are busy and loud; book a room away from the bars if you sleep early.
  • Summer riverfront is humid; winter brings a cold wind off the water.
  • Check opening hours before you go: several venues cut hours outside summer.
