Tierp is a small industrial and railway town of about 5,500 people in northern Uppsala County, the largest settlement between Uppsala and Gävle. It grew around the 1874 station on the Uppsala–Gävle line and still works as a stop rather than a destination: a 13th-century church with a boat grave, a burial mound, a runestone walk and a manhole-cover ironworks sit within a few minutes of the platform. Most travellers see it in half a day on the way north or south; the surrounding villages of Söderfors, Lövstabruk and Örbyhus hold the better sights.
