Isparta sits at 1,065 m in the Lakes District (Göller Yöresi) of Mediterranean Turkey and is the country's rose-oil town: petals are picked at dawn from May to June. A 1914 earthquake flattened the old town, so this is a modern city with no historic quarter — its value is as a low-cost, walkable base for Sagalassos, Davraz mountain and Lake Eğirdir, not as a sightseeing destination in itself.

The town sights are all within walking distance of the centre. For Sagalassos, Davraz and Lake Eğirdir you need your own wheels or a taxi — there is no useful local bus network for visitors.

Watch out

Safety

Isparta is a calm, low-crime inland city and walking the centre is fine day and night. The real risks are winter cold and ice at 1,065 (≈ US$30) m, unlit mountain roads to Sagalassos and Davraz, and summer heat on exposed ruins.
  • The inter-city bus terminal opened in 2024, 5 km north of downtown, with no public transport link: budget a taxi.
  • Isparta Museum has been closed for years — do not plan a day around it.
  • The Cankaya Museum shown on some maps is not a museum.
  • Winter nights at 1,065 (≈ US$30) m are cold; Davraz snow and ice can close the mountain road.
  • Pure rose oil is sold in bulk to perfume makers, not to tourists, and irritates skin — buy rose water instead.
