Monchique is a spa and market town in the Serra de Monchique, the range that separates the Algarve coast from the Alentejo. It sits about 450 m up, so it runs several degrees cooler than Portimão or Lagos, and the drive up the EN266 takes 20–30 minutes. The town itself is small — narrow cobbled streets, a square with cafés, a handful of craft shops — and the real draw is the mountain: Fóia, the Algarve's highest point, the old spa village of Caldas de Monchique, and trails through cork oak and eucalyptus. It is a weekend magnet for Portuguese from the coast, who come to eat black pork, wild boar and chicken piri-piri and fill bottles at the roadside springs. Two nights is plenty; one night plus a Fóia sunset is the efficient version.

Getting around

Walking covers the town centre; the Turismo has a free street plan and trail map. Everything else — Fóia, Caldas, the trailheads — needs a car or taxi. The EN266 from Portimão is served by a regular bus, but local services are thin: check times before you rely on them.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are mountain driving in fog, unlit cobbled streets at night and summer wildfire restrictions on the serra: check local notices before hiking in Jul–Sep.
  • Mountain roads are narrow and foggy in the morning; drive the EN266 in daylight the first time.
  • The Convento de Nossa Senhora do Desterro is a ruin, not a restored monument — go for the view over town, not the building.
  • Some restaurants close on Monday — check the individual restaurant before you drive out.
  • Summer weekends can fill the view restaurants along the Fóia road — book or arrive before 13:00.
