Fresnillo is a working mining city on the Zacatecas plateau, about 60 km northwest of the state capital and an hour from Zacatecas airport (ZCL). Its draw is narrow and real: a colonial centre, one of the world's largest silver mines, a free mining museum, three traditional markets and the pilgrimage church at Plateros. Most travellers pass through on the bus to Durango or Chihuahua, or stop for a night between Zacatecas and Sombrerete. It is not a leisure destination and the state has a serious violent-crime record: go for the specific sights, in daylight, and keep the evening short.

Getting around

Taxis are the normal way to move around; ask your hotel to call one and note the plates and driver ID before you get in. Mototaxis (motorcycle-drawn trailers) run short local hops. The centre itself is walkable between the plaza, the markets and the churches. Buses from the Central de Autobuses on Durango 402 connect to Zacatecas and regional cities.

Safety

The main risk in Fresnillo is violent crime linked to the state's cartel conflict, not petty theft. Move in daylight, use hotel-arranged taxis, avoid rural roads after dark and treat the centre as your boundary.
  • Zacatecas state has a high rate of cartel-related violence; travel in daylight, avoid isolated roads at night and keep to the centre after dark.
  • Arrange taxis by phone through your hotel rather than hailing on the street, and share the car and plate details with someone.
  • The bus terminal has a poor maintenance reputation; keep bags with you and don't linger.
  • Altitude is about 2,200 (≈ US$120) m: expect breathlessness on stairs for the first day.
  • Mine tours run on the operator's schedule, not a fixed daily timetable: confirm before you go.
