  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Hull is a narrow peninsula of sandbars and causeways at the tip of Boston's South Shore, about 16 km southeast of downtown. It has 5.6 km of hard-packed beach, a 1928 carousel and a lifesaving museum, and the MBTA ferry runs to Boston's Long Wharf year-round. Most visitors come for a single beach day or one night; the town is small and the season is short.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

One main road, Nantasket Avenue, runs the length of the peninsula; the MBTA 714 bus runs hourly along it and connects to the ferry terminal. A car is easiest for day trips off the peninsula; the ferry to Boston is the car-free option.

Drive Route 228 south then Route 3A along the coast

Follow Nantasket Ave southeast past Gunrock Beach onto Jerusalem Road for the coastal route.

Drive Route 3A south through Cohasset

Pairs well with Cohasset village on the same run.

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive Route 228 south to Route 106

Inland and mostly residential; only worth it if you're already touring the South Shore.

Quieter bay side near the MBTA ferry dock and Hull Gut; a few local bars, fewer beds.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime beach town; the real risks are rip currents and sun on the beach, summer traffic on the single road in and out, and drinking on an empty stomach at the bay-side bars.
  • Beach parking is $40 for out-of-state cars, $15 for Massachusetts residents — arrive early in summer.
  • No alcohol or cooking on Nantasket Beach Reservation.
  • Many restaurants and bars run seasonal hours; check before you count on a late dinner.
  • The ferry terminal has little shelter from sun or rain — don't plan to wait long there.
