San Luis is the capital of San Luis Province, founded in 1594 and re-founded in 1632, sitting at the foot of the Sierras Grandes on the Buenos Aires–Mendoza corridor. The downtown is walkable and modern but holds few sights; the reason to stop is the water and rock country just outside it — Potrero de los Funes, La Hoya and the Quebrada de los Cóndores. Most travellers pass through on a long-distance bus or use it as a one-night break on the drive west.

Getting around

The downtown sights — Plaza Independencia, the cathedral, MUHSAL and the Dora Ochoa de Masramón museum — are within a 15–20 minute walk of each other. Potrero de los Funes, La Hoya, the Quebrada de los Cóndores and Pueblo Memorial Puntano need a car, a remise or a taxi; there is no useful city bus for a short visit. Long-distance buses use the Terminal San Luis on Av. Santos Ortiz.

Watch out

Safety

San Luis is a calm provincial capital and the downtown is fine on foot in daylight. The real risks are summer heat, unlit roads out to the sierras at night, and swimming spots with no lifeguard — take a remise after dark rather than walking the highway shoulder.
  • Summer afternoons in Jan–Feb regularly pass 33 °C; do the canyon and hill walks before 11:00.
  • River and reservoir swimming spots have no lifeguards on weekdays; check locally after rain, when the Volcán River runs high.
  • Provincial holidays fill Potrero de los Funes and La Punta hotels; book ahead or you will be driving back to the city at night.
  • Card and ATM coverage outside the centre is thin — carry some pesos in cash.
