MonticelloMonticello, Kentucky
Go for 1–2 nights if you have a boat, houseboat booking or Lake Cumberland cabin; without water plans, the mill and lake still make a solid day trip from Somerset.
Monticello is the seat of Wayne County and one of the towns on Lake Cumberland, a reservoir that draws houseboat renters, anglers and marina-goers from May to September. The town itself is small (population about 6,200) and dry: no alcohol sales in the county except wine at one winery. Come for the lake, the Mill Springs Mill and the quiet; skip it if you want restaurants, bars and walkable sights.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
You need a car. Monticello sits on KY-90, not on an interstate: Glasgow is west, Somerset east, both roughly 40 min (check). Marinas and campgrounds are 10–25 min out of town on two-lane roads (check). Boats, not buses, are how you move on the lake.

Watch out
Safety
- Wayne County is dry: no alcohol sales in town; the nearest full liquor sales are in Somerset. One winery is the exception.
- Marinas, the mill and Corps campgrounds run May–September only; winter visits mean closed gates.
- Cell signal is patchy on the lake arms and back roads.
- Deer on KY-90 at dusk; the road is two-lane with few lights.
