Westport is a small planned town on the Carrowbeg River, the main base for southwest County Mayo and Clew Bay. Two nights covers the town, Westport House and one outdoor day; three nights adds Clare Island or Achill. You need a car or a bike for almost everything outside the centre.

Getting around

Walk the centre; the Quay is a 2 km walk or short taxi. Bus 450 follows the coast to Newport, Mulranny, Achill Sound and on to Murrisk and Louisburgh, roughly every 2–3 hours Mon–Sat with about three Sunday runs. Bike hire is on James St and Church St. A car is the practical choice for Croagh Patrick, Louisburgh, Roonagh pier and the Greenway.

Watch out

Safety

Westport is a low-crime town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are Atlantic weather on Croagh Patrick, wet roads on the N5 and R335, and cold water at the beaches: tell someone your route and carry a charged phone.
  • Reek Sunday (last Sunday in July) brings 15,000–30,000 (≈ US$18,000–35,000) pilgrims to Croagh Patrick: roads and car parks around Murrisk fill early.
  • Croagh Patrick is a steep scree path, about 7 km with 2 h 30 min up and 90 min down: boots, rain gear and no flip-flops.
  • Roonagh pier ferries to Clare Island and Inishturk are foot-passenger only; the bus connection from Westport must be booked the day before.
  • Westport House house tours and the adventure park are separately ticketed and the house runs Apr–Sep only: check dates before you build a day around it.
  • Westport Woods Hotel is convenient but dated with uneven service: read recent reviews before booking.
