Zonguldak is a Black Sea coal port: a working industrial city of about 100,000 people, not a resort. Its draw is mining heritage — two free museums, a show cave and a coal geopark — plus a harbour breakwater with views along a rugged coast. Sights are spread over a steep, stepped town, and the sea resort of Amasra 90 minutes east does the beach-and-old-town job better. Come for the industrial story, one night, and treat it as a base for day trips.

Getting around

Dolmuşes run along the coast road east to Kilimli and west to Kozlu. Inland streets are steep with stepped pavements, so walking the centre takes longer than the map suggests. Taxis are cheap and plentiful; the bus station sits next to the port.

Watch out

Safety

Zonguldak is a normal working city and feels safe by day; the real risks are steep wet steps, unlit industrial ground near the old coal complex, and winter rain. Use 112 for anything urgent.
  • Steep streets and stairways: wear shoes with grip, especially after rain.
  • The Varagele Tunnel is sometimes littered; go in daylight.
  • Coal-country weather: rain most of the winter, so pack a shell.
  • Check museum opening days — most close on Mondays.
