Cheltenham is a Regency spa town on the edge of the Cotswolds, 2 h 15 min by train from London Paddington. Its draw is the Promenade and Montpellier shopping streets, Pittville Park and the Pump Room, and the racecourse — which fills every bed in town during the Gold Cup in mid-March. Most visitors use it as a base for the Cotswolds and Gloucester, not as a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Promenade to Montpellier is about 10 min on foot. Stagecoach buses (lettered routes, e.g. D) link the station, town centre and racecourse; a town day ticket costs £4.00. Taxis run on meters from ranks on the Promenade; booked cabs cost less. Driving is easy outside the centre but the one-way system confuses first-timers — use a park-and-ride on race days.

Cheltenham is a low-crime town by UK standards; the practical risks are the Honeybourne Line after dark, race-week crowds and drink prices, and uneven pavements in the older streets.
  • Gold Cup week in mid-March: book accommodation months ahead, often the previous year, and expect surge pricing.
  • The Honeybourne Line walking and cycling path between the station and town has had reports of muggings at night — use the lit streets after dark.
  • Town-centre parking is paid and run by the council or NCP; check the machine, not the app.
  • Racecourse events and festivals sell out: buy tickets in advance on official sites.
  • Cotswold day trips by bus are slow and infrequent on Sundays — check timetables before relying on them.
