One night only works with an early arrival and late departure.
Nakusp is a village of about 1,600 people on the east shore of Upper Arrow Lake in the West Kootenays, reached by BC-23 from Revelstoke with a ferry crossing. It is a hot-springs and lake stop, not a sightseeing city: the pools at Halcyon are 35 km north and you need a car to reach them, the village itself is walkable in about 20 minutes, and the nearest commercial airports are Castlegar and Kelowna. Two nights suits visitors who want both the pools and the village; one night only works if you arrive early and leave late. Lake swimming, boating and beach time are seasonal and conditions vary: check locally.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
- Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
- Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Watch out
Safety
- BC-23 north of Nakusp includes a ferry crossing: check the sailing times and queue before you commit to a tight schedule.
- Wildfire smoke and road closures are real summer risks in the West Kootenays: check DriveBC and the BC Wildfire Service before driving.
- Cell coverage thins on the highway between towns; download offline maps.
- Many businesses run shorter hours outside summer: check before you plan an evening around one.
