Abingdon-on-Thames is a market town on the Thames about 7 miles south of Oxford, with a population of roughly 33,000. It was the county town of Berkshire until 1870 and moved to Oxfordshire in the 1974 reorganisation. The centre is small enough to walk in an hour; the draw is the 17th-century County Hall, the remains of a Benedictine abbey, the river, and two street fairs each October. Most visitors see it as a half-day from Oxford or a quiet one-night stop.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; County Hall, the abbey buildings and the river are all within 10 minutes of the Market Place. Buses link Abingdon with Oxford, Didcot and nearby villages; routes and times are published by Oxfordshire County Council and OxonTime. National Cycle Route 5 and the Hanson Way pass through town, with Oxford about 9 miles north and Didcot about 15 miles south. Salter's Steamers run river trips from Oxford's Folly Bridge in the May–September season.

A low-crime market town; the practical risks are traffic on the A34 and Bridge Street, dark towpaths and riverside paths after rain, and drinking to excess on fair nights. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • No train station in town: the nearest is Radley, and both Radley and Oxford need a bus connection to reach the centre.
  • The Michaelmas Fair closes Ock Street, High Street and the Market Place for two days in early October, with the Runaway Fair about a week later; roads and parking are affected.
  • Bun Throwing is not on a fixed calendar: it happens only when the town council votes to hold one, usually for a royal occasion.
  • County Hall roof access is a small paid extra on top of free museum entry, and opening hours are limited; check before you go.
