Port Alberni sits at the head of a long inlet at the base of Mount Arrowsmith, about an hour west of Nanaimo on Highway 4 and the last real service town before the Pacific coast. It is a working forestry and fishing town of about 18,000 people, not a resort: the draw is the steam railway, the salmon run, the inlet and cheaper beds than Tofino. Most travellers give it one night or one day; anglers and hikers give it two or three.

Getting around

The town is spread along a valley, so a car is the practical choice: Highway 4 runs through it and most sights sit 5–15 min apart. BC Transit runs three daytime routes Monday–Saturday plus one evening/Sunday route, $2 cash fare, free for children under 6. Taxis are cheap for short hops; United Cabs is the local operator.

Watch out

Safety

A small, quiet town and one of the safer stops on the island. The real risks are the Highway 4 drive, logging roads, cold inlet water and winter rain: lock the car, don't swim alone, and keep to daylight on the coast road.
  • Highway 4 west of town is a two-lane mountain road with logging trucks: drive it in daylight, not after a long flight.
  • Winter is wet and the valley airport is fog-prone; build a buffer if you are connecting to a flight.
  • Mount Arrowsmith trailheads are reached by active logging roads: check road status and give way to trucks.
  • Book the steam train and summer beds ahead in July and August; the town fills with anglers and coast-bound traffic.
