Delray Beach

Give Delray Beach 2 nights: one full day on Atlantic Avenue and the free beach, one for the Morikami gardens or the Wakodahatchee boardwalk. A car helps.

Delray Beach is a small city on Florida's Atlantic coast, about 67,000 people, built around one street: Atlantic Avenue, called "The Avenue". It runs from the Intracoastal Waterway east to a free public beach, with restaurants, bars and shops packed along it. Two nights covers the beach, the Avenue and one nature stop; three nights if you want the Morikami gardens and a day trip to Boca Raton or West Palm Beach. Winter (December to April) is the season to go; summer is hot, humid and inside hurricane season.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown and the beach are walkable, but the city is spread out and a car is the practical choice for the Morikami gardens, the wetlands and the airports. Tri-Rail runs regional trains to Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Miami, and a free downtown shuttle loops between the Tri-Rail station and the beach (check current routes and hours). Taxis and rideshare cover short hops.

Watch out

Safety

Delray Beach is a generally safe beach town, but Atlantic Avenue nightlife brings drink-spiking and bar-bill risk, and summer heat and hurricane season are the real hazards. Lock your car, keep to lit streets after midnight, and check storm forecasts June–November.
  • Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking August to October: check forecasts and know your airline's change policy.
  • Summer heat index regularly reaches 32–38 °C (90–100 °F): plan beach and boardwalk time for morning or early evening.
  • Parking on A1A and at the beach is metered and fills up on winter weekends: arrive before mid-morning.
  • Atlantic Avenue bars get loud and busy late on weekends; watch your drink and your bill.
  • Alligators live in Florida's fresh water, including the wetlands: stay on the boardwalk and keep distance.
