Woerden is a small Utrecht-province town on the Old Rhine, 12–13 minutes by intercity from Utrecht and about 20 from Gouda. The old centre is a compact ring around a moat, with a 15th-century castle, a cheese warehouse and a Saturday farmers market. Two to four hours covers it; most travellers see it as a stop on the way somewhere else, not a place to sleep.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. Local buses run from the station to the outer neighbourhoods; a single ride is about €1.60 on an OV-chipkaart, or €2.90 for an OV-Reiskaartje bought on the bus (debit/credit card only, valid 60 min). Bike rental at the station is about €7 per day. Trains run roughly 05:00–01:00; there are no night trains to Woerden, so after that you reach Utrecht by night train and continue by night bus or taxi.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small Dutch town; the real issues are wet cobbles, bikes on the ring road and Sunday closures. Emergency number is 112.
  • No night trains: last services leave around midnight to 01:00 depending on destination — check NS before a late arrival.
  • Most shops close on Sundays; only a couple of supermarkets open in the late afternoon, both outside the centre.
  • Rijnstraat can jam on Saturdays; walk it instead of driving.
  • Lock your rental bike properly even though theft is less common than in Utrecht or Amsterdam.
  • Castle courtyard access depends on the restaurants being open; the interior is not a normal museum visit.
