Carlyle

Stay one night, not three: Carlyle is a bed base for Moose Mountain Provincial Park and Cannington Manor, both within a 30-minute drive.

Carlyle is a town of about 1,500 on Highways 9 and 13 in southeastern Saskatchewan, roughly 2.5 hours from Regina and 4 hours from Winnipeg. Almost nobody comes for the town itself: it is the closest place with motels, fuel and a grocery store to Moose Mountain Provincial Park, 24 km north, and to Cannington Manor, 29 km northeast. One night covers both; two nights if you want a full lake day.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Arrive & move

Getting around

You need a car. There is no town transit and no taxi worth relying on; Highway 9 runs north to Kenosee Lake and Moose Mountain, Highway 13 runs west to Weyburn and east toward Manitoba. Fuel up in Carlyle before heading into the park.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 25 min

Drive Highway 9 north about 24 km (15 mi) to Kenosee Lake

Beach, trails and Kenosee Lake village; the main reason to base here.

Cannington Manor Provincial Historic Park

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive Highway 13 east then Highway 603 north, about 29 km (18 mi)

1882 English-style settlement, abandoned by 1900; self-guided walk, seasonal.

Weyburncaution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Highway 13 west

Full services and a bigger grocery run; not a sight in itself.

Estevancaution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Highway 9 south then Highway 39

Border-country town; pair with a Manitoba or North Dakota run.

Whitewoodcaution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Highway 9 north then Highway 1 east

Trans-Canada stop with heritage buildings; better as a break on a longer drive.

Railway Avenue and Main Street

The two motels and the museum sit here; walkable to the few downtown shops.

Highway 9 north edge

Drive-in and the road to Moose Mountain; pick this if you are leaving early for the park.

Moose Mountain Provincial Park

Campground and cabin country 24 km (15 mi) north; no motels, so book a site or stay in town.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime small town; the real risks are rural driving, winter storms and long distances between services. 911 works throughout.
  • Distances are long and cell coverage thins on back roads: carry water and tell someone your route.
  • The drive-in takes cash only.
  • Park facilities and the drive-in are seasonal, roughly May to September: check before you drive out.
  • Winter driving on Highway 9 and 13: black ice, drifting snow and closed sections after storms.
