Dover is a small New Hampshire mill city on the Cochecho River, settled in 1623 and one of the oldest cities in the United States. It has a walkable downtown, a working Amtrak station on the Downeaster line between Boston and Portland, and a cluster of independent restaurants on Central Avenue. Most travellers use it as a cheaper, quieter base for the Seacoast, or as a rail stop between Boston and Maine. Two nights covers it; one night is enough if you are passing through.

Getting around

Downtown Dover is walkable: the train station, Central Avenue restaurants and the riverfront are within about 15 minutes on foot. For anything else you need a car — the Spaulding Turnpike (Route 16) links to I-95 in about 10 minutes. COAST runs local buses and Wildcat Transit serves the University of New Hampshire campus; both are limited in the evening, so check the last departure.

Safety

Dover is a small city and downtown is walkable in the evening. The real risks are winter ice from Dec to Mar, and thin late-night bus service — plan a taxi or drive if you are out past the last bus.
  • Winter ice on pavements and steps is the main injury risk from Dec to Mar.
  • COAST and Wildcat Transit evening service is thin: check the last bus before you rely on it.
  • C&J Trailways routes to Boston and Logan are separate services — buy the ticket for the route you actually want.
  • Woodman Institute Museum closes for the winter (Dec–Mar) and keeps short afternoon hours the rest of the year: check before you go.
