Weed is a small Siskiyou County town of about 2,700 people at the western foot of Mount Shasta, on Interstate 5 between Redding (1 h 15 min south) and Medford, Oregon (1.5 h north). The name comes from lumber pioneer Abner Weed, not cannabis. Sights are few and spread out, so most travellers use it as a single overnight on the I-5 run or as a cheaper bed for Mount Shasta and the Ski Park.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: I-5 exits 745, 747 and 748 serve the town, and US 97 starts at N Weed Blvd for Klamath Falls. Siskiyou County's STAGE bus (routes 2B and 3B) links Weed with Dunsmuir, McCloud, Mount Shasta and Yreka, with a stop on Black Butte Drive across from the Quality Inn. Greyhound stops at Dos Amigos Restaurant, 175 E Vista Dr.

Safety

Weed is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are I-5 winter storms, summer wildfire smoke and long unlit drives on US 97. Lock the car, keep water in it and check road conditions before crossing the Siskiyou Summit.
  • Summer wildfire smoke can cut visibility and air quality; check air quality and I-5 conditions before driving.
  • Winter storms close or hold I-5 over the Siskiyou Summit and near Mount Shasta; carry chains in season.
  • The historic mill area at the northeast corner of town has long-running contamination cleanup: stay on public roads and trails.
