Chelmsford is the county town of Essex and a fast rail junction, 35 minutes from London Liverpool Street. It is a working city with a cathedral, two museums and a country park, not a destination in itself. Most travellers use it as a cheap bed for London, Stansted or Colchester, or as a half-day stop between them.

The pedestrianised High Street and both malls are walkable; the centre is flat. Local buses run within town (£1–3 return) and interurban buses reach Stansted and Colchester. Taxis wait at ranks by the station and on Market Road; hail from the street is rare. National Cycle Route 1 passes through, but cycling is banned on the High Street.
