Skipton is a market town of about 15,000 people on the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales, 40 minutes by train from Leeds. The castle, the canal basin and the market sit within a 10-minute walk of each other, so the town itself fills a morning; the afternoon belongs to Bolton Abbey, the Strid or the Dales. It works as a day trip from Leeds or as a one-night base for walkers, and it is small enough to cover on foot.

Watch out

Safety

Skipton is a low-crime market town and safe to walk at night. The real risks are the Strid's current, wet limestone paths on the Dales walks, and traffic on the A65 at Gargrave.
  • The Strid on the Bolton Abbey estate has killed people: stay on the path, never step onto the rocks.
  • Bolton Abbey charges per vehicle for parking, not per person; the abbey ruins themselves are free to walk around.
  • Skipton sits just outside the West Yorkshire Metro zone, so split-ticketing to Keighley or Steeton & Silsden can cut the fare.
  • Market days are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; the rest of the week High Street is quieter.
  • Skipton Castle has no wheelchair access.
