Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Sorrento sits on cliffs above the Bay of Naples, on the Circumvesuviana line from Naples and a short ferry hop from Capri. It works as a base for Pompeii, Herculaneum and the Amalfi Coast, but the town itself is small and hotel prices climb hard in summer. Two nights covers the centre and one big day trip; three lets you add Capri or the coast.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is walkable. Circumvesuviana trains run to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Naples; SITA buses run along the Amalfi Coast to Positano and Amalfi; ferries leave Marina Piccola for Capri, Ischia, Positano and Amalfi. Local buses and taxis cover the hills. Scooter hire runs about €35–45 a day, but traffic on the coast road is heavy.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Pompeii

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, about 30 min

Go at opening; the site is hot and shadeless by midday.

Capri

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Ferry from Marina Piccola, about 20–30 min

Book the morning crossing in summer; the last boats back fill up.

Herculaneum

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Circumvesuviana to Ercolano Scavi, then a 10-min walk downhill

Smaller and better preserved than Pompeii; pairs well with a Vesuvius stop.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Circumvesuviana to Napoli Porta Nolana or Garibaldi, or Campania Express in season

The commuter train is slow and crowded; the Campania Express is faster and has seats.

Positano and Amalfi

caution

Door to door: 1–2 h

SITA bus from outside Sorrento station, or seasonal ferry from Marina Piccola

Summer buses fill up and the coast road jams; the ferry is faster when it runs.

Procida

overnight

Door to door: 2–3 h

Ferry via Naples or seasonal direct service

Too long for a comfortable return day; sleep on the island.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro Storico (Piazza Tasso area)

Walk to everything: Corso Italia, Via San Cesareo, restaurants. Noisy at night in summer.

Marina Grande

Waterfront fishing quarter with seafood restaurants; 15–20 min walk uphill to the centre.

Sant'Agnello

Quieter, cheaper, one Circumvesuviana stop or a 20–30 min walk from the centre.

Sorrento hills (Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi)

Views and pools, but you need a bus or car for every trip into town.

Watch out

Safety

Sorrento is a safe, well-policed tourist town. The real risks are summer heat, pickpockets on crowded Circumvesuviana trains, and scooter traffic on the coast road: wear a helmet if you rent one, and watch your bag on the train.
  • Circumvesuviana trains are crowded and often lack air conditioning; board at Naples Porta Nolana for a seat.
  • Ticket machines are scarce and often out of order; buy on the Unico Campania app or at staffed counters.
  • Parking is very limited and the coast road is slow: driving into Sorrento in summer can cost 1.5 hours from Naples.
  • Beach clubs at Marina Piccola charge about €5–10 (≈ US$6–12) for a sunbed and umbrella.
  • Ferries to Capri sell out on summer mornings: book ahead or go early.
