Give Cuxhaven 1–2 nights if you want the Wadden Sea and the Kugelbake; skip it as a base if you are not here for the coast.
Cuxhaven sits where the Elbe meets the North Sea, about 1 h 45 min by train from Hamburg. It is one of Germany's largest seaside resorts by overnight stays, but the town itself is small and quiet: the reason to come is the Wadden Sea, the Kugelbake landmark and the harbour, not a big-city sight list. Most travellers use it for one or two nights, often paired with Bremerhaven or a trip out to Neuwerk.

Safety
- Wadden Sea tides rise fast and Priele can cut you off: go only with a guide or a tidal calendar, and never walk out alone.
- Non-residents pay a Kurtaxe (tourist fee) to use the beach; if your accommodation already charged it, show the receipt.
- Many shops in the centre take EC cards but not credit cards; carry some cash.
- The B73 from Hamburg is not a motorway and has a bad accident record: allow extra time and drive carefully.
