Buxton is a spa town of about 20,000 people on the western edge of the Peak District, 53.2590 N, 1.9110 W. It is the last stop on the rail line from Manchester Piccadilly via Stockport, and its Georgian Crescent, mineral water well and opera house sit within a 10-minute walk of each other. Most visitors come for a day from Manchester or Derby, or use it as a base for the surrounding Peak District.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to Crescent is about 5 minutes on foot. Local buses leave from Market Place in Higher Buxton; check Derbyshire bus information for times. A car helps for the Peak District, but the A537 Macclesfield road (the Cat and Fiddle) has a persistently higher risk rating and the high routes close in snow and ice.
