  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
  • Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.
  • Mexico ↗Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water and ice from reliable places.
  • Mexico ↗Foreign visitors to Quintana Roo (Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Bacalar, Holbox) pay the state VISITAX online at visitax.gob.mx only; lookalike sites add fees.

Tepotzotlán is a Pueblo Mágico 40 km northeast of Mexico City, on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. Its draw is one building: the former Jesuit college of San Francisco Javier, now the Museo del Virreinato, one of Mexico's largest history museums. Add the aqueduct park at Arcos del Sitio and a weekend street market, and you have a full day. Most travellers come from Mexico City and go back the same evening.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The historic centre is small and walkable: museum, parish church, plaza and restaurants sit within about 10 minutes on foot. For Arcos del Sitio and the bus terminal you need a taxi or your own car. Rideshare apps work in the centre but supply thins out at night and at the aqueduct.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Pullman de Morelos or other lines from the Tepotzotlán caseta to Terminal del Norte, then Metro

Buses run roughly hourly; the return leg is the one to plan around.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Car or taxi via the toll ring road; no direct bus link

Doable by car, awkward without one; most people visit from Mexico City instead.

Tolucacaution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Car or taxi on the toll highways, or bus with a change

Better as a separate stop than a day trip from here.

Otumba

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Car or taxi north on the toll highway

Small archaeological site and market town; pairs well with a car day.

El Oro de Hidalgo

overnight

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

Car on MEX 53D and state roads

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep there.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Centro / Plaza Virreinal

Walk to the museum, parish church and most restaurants; best for one night without a car.

Around Av. Benito Juárez

Main commercial street with hotels, pulquería and eateries; 5–10 min walk to the plaza.

Caseta / highway side

Bus terminal and chain motels on the toll road; only useful if you are passing through by bus.

Watch out

Safety

Tepotzotlán is a calm, small town and the centre is fine on foot in daylight and early evening. The real risks are the unlit highway edges at night, thin taxi supply after dark, and pickpockets in the weekend market crowds.
  • Arcos del Sitio is outside town with no regular public transport: arrange a return taxi or drive.
  • Weekend tianguis crowds fill the centre streets; parking and restaurant tables go early.
  • Some small eateries and the budget hotel take cash only: carry pesos.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June to September.
