Ocracoke is a 16-mile barrier island at the southern end of the Outer Banks, reachable only by ferry or small plane. The village clusters around Silver Lake harbor and is walkable or bikeable; the beach and campground sit a few miles east on NC-12. Two or three nights covers the lighthouse, the beach, the village and a paddle or fishing trip without rushing the ferry schedule.

Getting around

Walk or bike in the village — parking is scarce and streets are narrow with a 20 mph limit. Golf carts are allowed inside the village only, no further than Howard's Pub. The beach and campground need a car, bike or shuttle. Bike, scooter and golf-cart rentals operate in the village.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime — the main risks are ocean currents, rip tides, bicycles on NC-12 and storms that suspend ferries or close the highway. Swim near lifeguarded access points and check the NPS beach-safety advice.
  • The island is ferry-only: the free Hatteras crossing takes about 70 min and runs roughly every 30 min in summer; Cedar Island (about 2 h 15 min) and Swan Quarter (about 2 h 40 min) have only 2–4 departures a day and need reservations for a car.
  • Storms can suspend ferries and close NC-12 at the Pony Pens over wash, stranding visitors for days — check the forecast and obey evacuation orders.
  • No sidewalks on much of NC-12: bike on the right, walk facing traffic.
  • Many restaurants and lodgings close in winter; check before booking a cold-season trip.
  • Cell and data coverage can be weak; download offline maps and confirm your eSIM works before you board.
