Korčula is a walled peninsula town on an island of the same name, 2–3 hours from Dubrovnik by road and ferry. The old town is small enough to cross on foot in 15 minutes, so the island — beaches, vineyards, Lumbarda's grk — is the reason to add a night. Two nights covers the town, one beach day and a wine stop; three nights lets you reach Vela Luka and the west end.

Getting around

The old town is pedestrian: walk everywhere. Buses from the station at the southeast corner of the old town run to Lumbarda (about 15 min, €3.50) and across the island to Vela Luka (about 1 h, €6). Bikes rent for €9–12/day. Water taxis cross to Badija and the islets, and to Orebić in under 10 minutes.

West end, 43 km and about 1 h by bus; the car-ferry port for Split. Use it if you arrive late or leave early.

Watch out

Safety

Korčula is a low-crime island and the old town is safe at night. The real risks are sea urchins and pebble beaches, summer heat, and unmaintained rental boats — if you have no boat experience, take a water taxi instead.
  • Beaches are pebble and rock: wear shoes in the water, sea urchins are common.
  • Renting a small boat without experience is risky — engine failures happen and rescue can take hours.
  • Ferry and catamaran seats sell out in Jul–Aug; book ahead.
  • Old-town rooms involve stairs and no vehicle access — pack light.
